1. Palawan, Philippines — best overall
Palawan tops most island lists in Asia for one reason: scenery. El Nido and Coron lagoons rival anything in the world, and the underwater visibility is consistently the best in Southeast Asia. The trade-off is travel time — long internal flights and basic boat infrastructure. Plan 7–10 days minimum.
2. Koh Lanta, Thailand — best for relaxed beach time
Koh Lanta is the antidote to Phuket and Phi Phi — long quiet beaches on the west coast, a chilled-out long-stay traveller crowd, excellent food and easy access via ferry from Krabi. Better for couples, families and digital nomads than party travellers. Stay 5–7 nights minimum.
3. Langkawi, Malaysia — best for variety in one island
Beaches, rainforest, cable car, mangroves, family resorts, and direct flights from KL, Singapore, Bangkok and Penang. Best Southeast Asian island for first-time families. See our Langkawi family travel guide.
4. Lombok, Indonesia — Bali without the crowds
Lombok is Bali 15 years ago — quieter, cheaper, less commercial. Kuta Lombok and the south coast have arguably the best surf beaches in Indonesia. Mount Rinjani is one of Southeast Asia's great treks. Skip if you want luxury infrastructure; embrace if you want fewer crowds.
5. Phu Quoc, Vietnam — best for end-of-trip beach
Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island and the easiest beach addition to a Vietnam trip. Direct flights from Saigon (1h). South of the island is overdeveloped; north is quiet, undeveloped and beautiful. Best for 3–5 nights of pure beach.
6. Koh Tao, Thailand — best for scuba
Koh Tao is the cheapest place in the world to get your PADI Open Water certification ($280–360). Even non-divers love the small-island scale, easy snorkelling and laid-back atmosphere. Combine with Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.
7. Gili Islands, Indonesia — best for short escape
Three tiny islands off Lombok with no motor vehicles. Gili T for the party, Gili Air for the middle ground, Gili Meno for honeymoon-quiet. 2–3 nights is enough; reachable by speedboat from Bali or Lombok.
How long to stay on each
- Palawan — 7–10 nights minimum
- Koh Lanta — 5–7 nights
- Langkawi — 4–5 nights (more with kids)
- Lombok — 5–7 nights (more if doing Rinjani)
- Phu Quoc — 3–5 nights
- Koh Tao — 4 nights (longer for diving course)
- Gilis — 2–3 nights

Frequently asked questions
What is the most beautiful island in Southeast Asia?+
Palawan in the Philippines (El Nido and Coron lagoons) consistently ranks first for scenery and underwater visibility. Lombok and Koh Lanta are close runners-up depending on whether you weight beaches, surf or quiet atmosphere.
Which Southeast Asian island is best for families?+
Langkawi (Malaysia) and Phu Quoc (Vietnam) for ease, calm beaches and good family resorts. Phuket's resort areas (not Patong) also work very well.
Which island is best for budget travel?+
Koh Lanta and Koh Tao in Thailand, plus Lombok and the Gilis in Indonesia. Vietnam's Phu Quoc is excellent value once you're there but the internal flight adds cost.
When is the best time to visit Southeast Asian islands?+
November–April is the dry season for most popular Thai, Malaysian and Indonesian islands. The Philippines (Palawan) is best December–May. Always check the specific island — opposing coasts (e.g. east vs west Malaysia) have opposing rainy seasons.
How do I island hop in Southeast Asia?+
Use a combination of internal flights (AirAsia, VietJet, Cebu Pacific) and ferries (Bounty, Eka Jaya, Royal Caribbean Boat). Always book multi-island ferries via reputable operators, not the cheapest available.
