7-day Malaysia itinerary: route overview
Seven days in Malaysia is enough to combine the country's three signature experiences: Kuala Lumpur (city, food, culture), Penang (heritage and street food) and Langkawi (island and rainforest). The trick is using a short Penang→Langkawi flight to avoid the slow ferry and to land on the beach with energy left.
Skip Borneo on a 7-day plan — Sabah and Sarawak deserve their own week. Skip Cameron Highlands too unless you cut Penang; the road there is winding and slow.
Days 1–3 — Kuala Lumpur
Base in Bukit Bintang or KLCC. Day 1 (arrival): recover, evening walk to Petronas Towers fountain show, dinner at Jalan Alor. Day 2: Batu Caves at 7:30 am, late breakfast in Brickfields, Merdeka Square and Islamic Arts Museum in the afternoon, guided KL street food tour in the evening.
Day 3: Pre-booked Petronas Towers skybridge slot in the morning, lunch at Lot 10 Hutong, half-day Kuala Selangor fireflies tour in the evening. This is the best day tour from Kuala Lumpur for a first visit.
Sleep close to the MRT/monorail (Bukit Bintang or Pasar Seni stations). Grab is cheap but evening traffic in KL can double a 15-minute ride to 35 minutes.
Days 4–5 — Penang
Fly Subang or KLIA to Penang (45 minutes, RM80–180). Base in George Town heritage area — Macalister Mansion, The Edison George Town or Seven Terraces for boutique stays, plenty of mid-range hotels around Armenian Street.
Day 4: George Town heritage trail (the famous street-art murals, Khoo Kongsi clan house, Cheong Fatt Tze blue mansion), lunch at Sin Hwa Coffee Shop, sunset cocktails at Magazine 63. Day 5: Penang Hill funicular in the morning, lunch at Kim Laksa, Kek Lok Si temple in the afternoon, evening at Gurney Drive hawker centre.
Penang is the best food city in Malaysia and arguably in Southeast Asia. Don't skip char kuey teow, asam laksa or cendol — each has a famous stall, and any local under 40 will give you a different ranking.
Days 6–7 — Langkawi
Fly Penang to Langkawi (35 minutes, RM80–150) on AirAsia or Firefly. Base in Pantai Cenang for first-timers. Day 6: Sky Cab + Sky Bridge in the morning with a fast-lane ticket, lunch at Oriental Village, slow afternoon at Pantai Cenang, sunset drinks on the beach.
Day 7: Small-group island-hopping tour in the morning, late lunch, flight home from LGK in the evening. Pre-book the Langkawi airport transfer so you're not chasing a taxi after a salty boat day.
Getting between cities in Malaysia
For a 7-day trip, fly both inter-city legs — KL→Penang and Penang→Langkawi. Total flight time is under 90 minutes vs 9+ hours overland. Compare Malaysia domestic flights: AirAsia, Batik Air and Firefly cover all three routes daily.
If you cut Langkawi, the ETS Gold train KL → Butterworth (Penang) is a comfortable 4-hour ride and worth doing once for the scenery.
Realistic 7-day Malaysia budget (per person)
Budget — RM2,000–2,800 / week (excl. international flights). Hostels and 3-star hotels, hawker meals, public transport, two paid activities.
Mid-range — RM4,500–6,500 / week. 4-star hotels in central neighbourhoods, mix of resort and local food, all signature activities, all domestic flights.
Premium — RM12,000+ / week. 5-star hotels (Mandarin Oriental KL, Eastern & Oriental Penang, Four Seasons Langkawi), private transfers, all activities and one private day tour.
Add international flights, travel insurance for Malaysia (US$25–50 for a week), and a small contingency for the duty-free temptations in Langkawi.
Best time of year for this Malaysia route
December–February is peak — driest, busiest, most expensive. June–August is the regional dry season for the west coast and a great window for this exact route. Avoid September–early October for haze and the heaviest Langkawi monsoon weeks.
Itinerary mistakes to avoid
- Trying to add Borneo or Cameron Highlands — both need their own week
- Taking the Penang → Langkawi ferry instead of flying — 2h 45m on the water + transfers vs 35 minutes
- Skipping pre-booked Petronas tickets — same-day slots sell out by 9 am
- Booking back-to-back full-day activities in 32 °C heat — leave one slow morning per city
- Renting a car in KL — Grab and rail are faster and you don't need one until Langkawi
Lock the inter-city flights and the headline activities first, then compare hotels in each city once you know your nights. A 7-day Malaysia trip done well is one of the best first-Asia routes there is.
