Short version: Phuket wins on infrastructure, choice and direct flights. Krabi wins on scenery, prices and family-friendliness. Most travellers who do both prefer Krabi.

Phuket has long, wide beaches with good infrastructure — Kata, Karon, Bang Tao and Mai Khao are the best. Patong is famous but crowded and over-developed. Sand is golden, water is clear most of the year. You don't need to take a boat to swim.

Phuket has Thailand's biggest beach nightlife — Bangla Road in Patong runs from beer bars to massive clubs. Kata and Karon are quieter, family-friendly evenings. Krabi nightlife is mostly low-key beach bars and live-music venues in Ao Nang — if 'big night out' is your goal, Phuket is the only choice.

Krabi (Ao Nang) is better for families with under-10s — gentler beaches, less traffic, easier to walk, fewer adult-oriented bars. Phuket works for families if you base in Kata, Karon or one of the resort areas — avoid Patong with kids.

Krabi is roughly 15–25% cheaper than Phuket for hotels and food. A 3-star beachfront in Ao Nang costs $40–60; the equivalent in Karon Phuket is $55–80. Activities and ferries are similar prices. Both are still excellent value compared to Bali or the Maldives. Compare prices for both on the same dates before deciding.

Phuket has a major international airport with direct flights from across Asia and seasonal flights from Europe. Krabi airport is smaller with direct flights from Bangkok, KL, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Compare flight prices for both — if Krabi is much pricier, fly into Phuket and take the 3-hour ferry-bus combo to Krabi.

Within both, pre-booked airport transfers save the stress of taxi-mafia negotiations after a long flight. Distances on Phuket are larger — Patong to the airport can be 90 minutes in traffic.

Both share the same day-trip menu: Phi Phi, Hong Islands, James Bond Island, sea-kayaking, snorkelling. From Krabi you reach Phi Phi in 90 minutes; from Phuket in 2 hours. The Hong Islands are easier from Krabi (45 minutes). Browse day trips before locking in your dates.
